Live-recording
To make some great recordings of a performance,
there are a lot of recording techniques. One technique is to record
music with 2 microphones. This technique is often used with Jazz
and classical music when the acoustics are great and the musicians are
very good. Several takes are made of one piece and the best performances can be edited together.
When recordings are made for (rock)bands, mostly multitrack
recorders are used. The multitrack recorders give you the possibility to
correct a piece of music when one note was out of tune or when a phrase
is not clear. With this kind of technique it is also possible to proces
the sound of the recording and makes sound possible which are not natural, but
artistically right.
Stereo recording
To make a great recording with just with 2 microphones you need a technician with a lot of knowledge of acoustics and high quality recording equipment. The equipment and the knowlegde to make these kind of recordings are availiable with Studio Froombosch. The recordings can be processed and cleaned with digital and analoog equipment. To make these recordings, straightforward but high-tech gear and techniques are used. Instead of a mixing desk, a high quality microphone pre-amp is used in conjunction with a high-quality modified DAT-recorder. The microphones must not be flattering, to record exactly what is happening and nothing more or less.
Stereo-recordings will not give great recordings
when the acoustic is of low quality or when the sounds are amplified through
Public Adress installations. Public Adres installations are developped
to create a high volume and less to create a undistorted image of what
is going on, on stage. A better alternative, in this case, is to
use multitrack recording techniques.
Multitrack recording
With an amplified band it is often better to use multitrack recording techniques. Afterwards the recordings can be processed and cleaned and its even possible to correct a bad phrase of lick. The most simple technique is to use the direct-outs of the mixing desk used by the PA-installation and connect them to the inputs of the multitrack recorders. The possition and the quality of the microphones have to be checked by a Studio Froombosch technician to prevent for bad (= not mixable) recording material. Additional microphones are used for recording the audiance.
An more expensive but definitely better method
is to place separate microphones and sepearate mixer to feed the multitrack-recorders.
With these multitrack-tapes very good results can be achieved. The quality
of the end result, will be determined by the mix and especially with amplified
bands this will give the best results
There are different ways to record live-music. Not every technique will fit and we can give advice about the possibilities.
